WHAT ARE PEPTIDES?

Peptides are chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins in the skin. When peptides form a long chain of amino acids, they become proteins. Acetyl hexapeptide 8, which is also known as Argireline®, is a peptide compound that is used in skin care products to reduce the appearance of wrinkles brought on by repeated facial expressions. Acetyl hexapeptide 8 can temporarily get rid of wrinkles by intercepting messages from the brain, thereby preventing muscle contractions. TRIPEPTIDE-1

Also known by the acronym “GHK” for the amino acids that comprise it (glycine, histidine, and lysine), tripeptide-1 is a synthetic signal peptide known to work with copper in skin to visibly repair substances that have begun to deteriorate due to age and sun exposure.Tripeptide 1 is responsible for promoting the production of fibroblasts. The role of the fibroblast is to create an extracellular matrix along with collagen. They are considered to the primary connective tissue cells structures within the body. Collagen is a protein that exists within the human body and it is responsible for “holding the body together”. Collagen can be found in the bones, inside of the skin, muscles, and tendons. The function of the protein is to give the body its form.Tripeptide 1, which encourages the development of fibroblasts promotes new cell growth while stimulating the production of collagen in the body. The compound plays an important role in anti-aging science and has been used in a number of products. As a member of the peptide family, it contains 3 amino acids and is fused together by a peptide bond.

TRIPEPTIDE-10 CITRULLINE

Tripeptide-10 Citrulline is a new cosmetic active, designed as a substitute of Decorin, that specifically targets collagen fiber organization to regulate collagen fibrillogenesis. Tripeptide-10 Citrulline ensures uniformity in fibril diameter and increases skin suppleness. Due to its good cohesion of collagen fibers, Tripeptide-10 Citrulline is widely used in anti-aging cosmetic products.

The regulation of collagen fibers is controlled by a number of molecules one of which is called decorin. As we get older, decorin activity declines. The new peptide, tripeptide-10 citrulline, is supposed to mimic decorin so that the collagen fibers are fooled into thinking they should still be productive.

A trial was conducted on 43 women, about half of which were given tripeptide-10 citrulline. Granted this was conducted by the manufacturer, Lipotec. Nevertheless, the results (published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science) aren’t bad with 54% showing an increase in skin suppleness. Over a two-month period, it was shown to make the fibers more uniform

Dietary and topical ascorbic acid have beneficial effects on skin cells, and some studies have shown that vitamin C may help prevent and treat ultraviolet (UV)-induced photodamage. However, the effects of vitamin C in the skin are not well understood due to limited research. This article discusses the potential roles of vitamin C in the skin and summarizes the current knowledge about vitamin C in skin health.

Vitamin C is a normal skin constituent that is found at high levels in both the dermis and epidermis. The vitamin C content of the epidermis is higher than the dermis, although the vitamin C concentrations in both layers are approximately equal to that of other water-soluble antioxidants, including uric acid and glutathione Aging, however, causes a decline in vitamin C content in both the epidermis and dermis. Excessive exposures to UV light or pollutants (e.g., cigarette smoke and ozone) may also lower vitamin C content, primarily in the epidermis.

Vitamin C in the skin is normally transported from the bloodstream. Transport proteins specific for ascorbic acid are found on cells in all layers of the skin. Keratinocytes have a high capacity for vitamin C transport, possibly to compensate for limited vascularization of the epidermis Oral supplementation with vitamin C effectively increases vitamin C levels in the skin. However, when plasma vitamin C levels are saturated, skin vitamin C concentrations no longer increase. Optimum skin concentrations of the vitamin are not yet known.
